This is a great event... if you're thinking about this one.... go for it.
The terrain, racers, spectators & overall vibe of this event were awesome. The volinteers were a huge help. An encouraging word goes along way when you're in mtb purgatory. Even had Jason R. coax me to roll down one of the hairy descents. "You got it... just roll it!" I think he could see the brake levers mashing and smell the fear all the way from the bottom.
They call the 1st major ascent the 'Damn Climb' for a reason, but the fast flowing ridge top descents make the climbing worth while.
It was cool to be racing along side the likes of Monique Sawicki & Tinker Juarez. I first noticed 'Pua' as I read her name on her shorts as she flew past me. I was happy that Tinker didn't pass me before I got in from my first lap.
Lessons Learned:
1. If you're not a wiz with the park tools, have a pro tune your bike before a 12hr race.
2. Didn't have a support crew, solo riders benefit tremendously from having friends to feed them and adjust the bike while you're in transition.
3. Select the proper fuel for a > 2 hour event. Incomplete electrolyte profile + Cafenne = dehabilitating cramps in my quads while climbing on laps 2 - 6.
4. Get a light that has a battery that weighs less than 2 pounds.
Accomplishments:
1. I kept going, regardless of the pain.
2. I took 3rd out of 4 in Solo Clydes, it's a start. Time to train for real.
Closing thoughts....
As Neil Adams said before the race... pointing toward the race course, "Talk is cheap... the truth is out there." Initially I didn't comprehend the weight of what he was saying. After putting my self through the ringer that day I might be a little closer to understanding. I guess that's why the 24 Solo series tag line says "Only those who dare to go too far will know how far one can go"
Peace,
Erik
